Seeing the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,
UPA government is mulling over increasing the number of working days from 100
to 150 under their ambitious MGNREGA program. Sources said that central cabinet
will discuss a proposal regarding this on Friday.
The aim of this populist
initiative is to attract rural voters who are 60% part of the country’s
population. Under the MGNREGA program, a legal guarantee has been given to a
member of every poor rural family of 100 days of work in a year. Daily wage of
Rs.100 is given under this. MGNREGA was launched just before the General
elections last time and UPA got political benefit of that to form UPA-2.
This time also UPA launched the Aadhar card
project but it failed to achieve that much of success as NREGA was able to
achieve. Election Commission of India has already announced the schedule for
the upcoming General Elections in the country which will be held in the month
of April and May in 9 phases. Seeing the popularity of BJP’s PM candidate
Narendra Modi, it is unlikely that UPA will continue to rule at the centre and
form UPA-3. UPA is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that they get
behind from the opposition.
